Is it possible for tourists to eat well with a view of some of Europe’s most treasured landmarks?
Be inspired by the new British Airways on board menu from Marks & Spencer and head to Europe to find more great food in unexpected places.
Laura Millar finds five fantastic places to eat while managing to take in some of Europe’s most famous landmarks…
Dionysos Zonar’s, Athens
Occupying a prime position on the outskirts of the Acropolis, Dionysos Zonar’s is a stylish restaurant that has overlooked the ancient pillars of the Parthenon for more than 50 years.
It serves elegant, modern interpretations of Greek cuisine, such as grilled octopus and moussaka, from a 1960s steel-and-glass building designed by prominent architect Prokopios Vasiliadis.
Popular with tourists, locals, celebrities and politicians alike, its irresistible blend of quality food with the ultimate location keeps people coming back for more.

Sitting out on the exclusive terrace at the top floor of the 17th-century Palazzo Manfredi, you could throw a stick and it would hit the Colosseum, it’s that close.
Now a luxury hotel, the Palazzo’s penthouse floor is home to Michelin-starred restaurant Aroma, where the breathtaking view will no doubt distract you from the food.
This would be a shame, however, as chef Giuseppe di Iorio creates luxurious but classic Italian cuisine with dishes including beef cheek on cabbage, roast mallard with apple, and Kobe beef tagliata.

Les Ombres, Paris
Perched on the top floor of the Musée du Quai Branly is the very modern steel-and-glass construction which houses Les Ombres.
Its main draw is the simply jaw-dropping, close-up view of the Eiffel Tower, which looks even better at night when it’s beautifully illuminated.
If you can tear your eyes away, however, the food by chef Frédéric Claudel – think duck breast, cod in mushroom sauce, or a rich chocolate sphere for dessert - is prettily presented on the plate. You don’t have to dine, though; there is also a terrace cocktail bar.

After seeing inside one of Gaudí’s most famous buildings, the Sagrada Familia church, you can gaze upon its exterior in more detail while dining on the terrace at traditional restaurant Babilonia, which is right in front of it.
It’s not fancy, but it dishes up good, honest Mediterranean cuisine, from pizza to calamari, and specialises in paella.
And you can’t argue with the view or the location. Babilonia, Av. de Gaudí, 3, 08025 Barcelona.

A slick, modern Thai restaurant, its setting on the fourth floor of a building in the elegant New Town means unobstructed and breathtaking views of Edinburgh’s historic castle.
The interior at Chaophraya is a compelling mix of styles, from art deco to colonial, where you can happily dine on Thai classics, from green and red curries, to pad thai and papaya salads, though there are some Scottish twists too, such as black pudding with mango. Watch as the ancient fortification is illuminated when the sun sets.
